Coldness of Heart

“In our culture, if someone spoke about coldness of the heart, we would likely describe it as an emotional issue, and dismiss it or diminish it as merely unfortunate. If, on the other hand, we were to speak about something interfering with our acquisition of information, we would treat it as a crisis of first-order.Continue reading “Coldness of Heart”

Who do they say that I am?

“Note that he is not asking them their own opinion. Rather, he asks the opinion of the people. Why? In order to contrast the opinion of the people with the disciples answer to the question “But who do you say that I am?” In this way, by the manner of his inquiry, they might beContinue reading “Who do they say that I am?”

Too Great

“Christianity is a lifestyle – a way of being in the world that is simple, non-violent, shared, and loving. However, we made it into an established “religion” (and all that goes with that) and avoided the lifestyle change itself. One could be warlike, greedy, racist, selfish, and vain in most of Christian history, and stillContinue reading “Too Great”

Exposing Decay

“We call the elevation of the individual and selfish will to this paramount status “democracy,” but more and more it will come to resemble a berserk state, a self-deification through the collapse of concern for anything other than the self…Today our common political and social program is the self–a paradox that either will open aContinue reading “Exposing Decay”

Love of Mother

Love cannot function without others. And from the very beginning—Love is fulfilled (for our witness) by His communion with humans. There is no love in thinking and believing in doctrine or playing mental gymnastics. No love in knowing or imagining or waiting for heaven. Love is in community. Love is a God who permeates throughoutContinue reading “Love of Mother”

Why I Speak Out

Once, I stood amid a crowd of people fighting for a cause—a broad, urgent need that was the main root of a whole network of thought and opinion, all growing inspiration for the same hope in change. Yet, a tiny voice inside me urged, take care to not stray past north. And my north, myContinue reading “Why I Speak Out”

Humility, Love, and Pre-Teens

I am in the thick of teaching my youngest about what it really means to Love sacrificially. A big idea for an eleven year old. But, as I hear about her encounters at school, the societal pressures of a whole student body of pre-teens, and the acceptance rate according to your appearance and your “in”Continue reading “Humility, Love, and Pre-Teens”

A Mom’s Peacemaking

A long time ago, a friend spoke some truth to me that went dormant in my heart. Lately, it is pressing on me more and more. She said, “You shouldn’t let your kids offend you.” This was after I admitted to being personally offended by my school age children’s words. It’s so hard to notContinue reading “A Mom’s Peacemaking”

Journey Toward Nativity: Into His Life

As I journey toward nativity, I find myself searching for ways to fit Christ in our season. Yesterday was St. Nicholas day, and I will admit, I spent more time focusing on what to put in my kids’ shoes, than contemplating the life of the saint who emanated Christ’s love throughout his lifetime. And yet, last night I was complaining that our Christmas is going to be boring this year—because we don’t have fun plans…you know, that’s what the season is about.

Journey Toward Nativity: Mary’s Obedience

For a long time, I would brush past the mother of God in my readings, thinking, “God could have chosen anyone”.
Of course. He’s God.
But would anyone respond the way Mary had?
